Shirley Howell Keyes, 82, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at Mission Hospital.

Shirley was born July 18, 1940, in Buncombe County, to the late Robert Herman Howell and Eva Elizabeth Shroat Howell. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Bobby Boyd; daughter, Tina Boyd Thompson; sons, James Roger Boyd and Billy Boyd; and sisters, Alrie Hunter, Annie Silvers and Alice Huskins.

Shirley graduated from Erwin High School and enjoyed class reunions and she was a member of the Red Hat Society, The Sassy Hatters. She was a member of the Hendersonville Shrine Club Auxiliary, the Order of Eastern Star, Biltmore Chapter #38, and Mt. Bethel Baptist Church, Weaverville.

She leaves behind the love of her life, her husband Howard Keyes; sons, Randy Boyd, Ricky Boyd, and Reggie Boyd; step-children, David Keyes, Jimmy Keyes (Cindy), Robert Keyes, Dorothy Bryant (Robbie), Laura Grooms (Randy) and Nita Capps (Tim); sisters, Margaret Griffin (Bill) and Betty Robinson; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Lunsford Cemetery, Alexander.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

  1. So sorry to hear of Shirley’s passing. I went school with all her kids and she always took her daughter Tina and I to our ballgames. She was always so sweet! Many prayers for the family

  7. Shirley was one of the sweetest ladies we have ever known! It was instant friendship when we met her and has been so wonderful knowing her! We so enjoyed socializing with her and Howard at Shriner’s functions in Charlotte. She will be tremendously missed!!

    We just heard about Shirley’s passing. Our sympathy to all of you. Shirley was always so sweet & friendly when ever we would see her in years past. Shirley Clark lost her husband, Earl, 2 years ago May 5th & she is a patient at Baptist Home now. Her sister, Debbie Parham is practically home bound with same health problems as Shirley which they inherited from their Daddy, Elmer Parham. Again our deepest sympathy.

So sorry to hear about Shirley ..we go way back during b school .I b was friends with her sister Betty .I spent many nights at the Howell House they finally adopted me they said bc I stayed there alot bc we were good friends. I will remember each of you in my thoughts and prayers. Again I’m so sorry Howard .
