Shirley Webb Mathes, 55, died Thursday, June 20, 2002, at her home, Magnolia Health Care Center, Asheville.
Mrs. Mathes was born in Buncombe County and was a daughter of Evelyn Hutchinson Webb of Leicester and the late Herman Webb. She was married to Charles F. Mathes, Sr., who died in 1990. She was a former employee of Fieldcrest and was a member of Pinnacle View Baptist Church.
In addition to her mother she is survived by two daughters, Wanda Powell of Asheville and Tracy Mathes of Arden; a son, Chuck Mathes of Leicester; a step-daughter, Sharon Ball of Hendersonville; a step-son, Kenneth Hall of Hendersonville; four grandchildren, Felicia Rice, James Powell, Jr., Dana Parris and Amy Parris; two step-grandsons, Jeremy “Corky” Powell and Shawn Brady; one sister, Myrtle Hare of Skyland and three brothers, Larry, John and Jerry Webb, all of Leicester.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 pm Saturday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral home with the Revs. Robert Owens and Cecil Robinson officiating. Burial will be at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7:00-8:30 pm Friday at the funeral home.

mom i know i made you a promise about tracy and chuck but it is very hard to keep that promise i am trying my best but tracy is doing so bad i think i am messing up chuck is doing alright now but tracy is on drugs so bad i sometimes wonder about her i hope that god can take care of her now i wish you were still here with us i know you could take care of this with her love you so much ok and you would be so proud of felicia and little james is getting so big and he loves you very much love always your daughter wanda

For those who knew her Shirley was a wonderful person, who always had a warm, friendly smile for everyone. She was dearly loved by her childern, family and friends. She has left this world for a much better place, where she can smile on everyone forever. She has left for now, but she will never be forgotten. My thoughts are with her family through this loss, espically her childern Charles, Wanda and Tracie. May the strength of her love guide each of you through life.

People that didn’t know her, She was a wonderful person. If she didn’t know you,she would come up to you and give you a hug an say I LOVE YOU.That was just how she was.But she gone to be with the lord.She in a better place, because there is no pain or anything up there.She has been sick for 30 years,Now she won’t be sick nomore.
