Born in: Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Resided in: Fletcher, North Carolina

Stephen Richard “Steve” Shutes, 52, of Fletcher, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, April 12, 2022.

Born in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on February 7, 1970, he was the husband of LeAnn (Griffin) Shutes of Fletcher, whom he met in Burnsville and married in 1998. Steve was the son of Paul and Lynn Shutes of Florida.

A resident of North Carolina for 29 years, Steve loved the mountains he called his home while never abandoning his love of the ocean. Steve had a zeal and passion for life. He never saw a dog he didn’t like – he was excited to visit new places – he proudly drove his meticulously maintained truck and worked to make his lawn the envy of the neighborhood. His quick wit and sense of humor were enjoyed by many. Above all, Steve treasured being with the family he dearly loved and the friends he valued so much.

Steve unashamedly loved his country and cherished his relationship with his Lord and Savior.

He was employed by James River Equipment in Asheville for over 23 years and counted those he worked with as friends, not coworkers.

In addition to his wife and parents, Steve is survived by his parents-in-law, Vhonda and Malcolm Blankenship of Burnsville; sister-in-law, Jennifer (Donnie) Poplin and nephew, Ty Ollis, of Marion; sisters, Sarah and Sandra Shutes of Florida; brother, Scott (Jamie) Shutes and niece and nephew, Savannah and Blake Shutes of Florida; and a number of cousins in various locations. He is loved and will be missed by so many.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, April 30, 2022, at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian. Family and friends will be received from 1:00 to 3:00 PM prior to the sharing of stories and memories from those who desire.

Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is assisting the family.

  1. LeAnn, I’m so bummed that I will not be able to be at Steve’s Celebration of Life and see you and his family. I am committed to be be at Duke for Angels Among Us, but I will certainly be thinking of y’all and keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. Steve was such a good friend and will truly be missed. Peace of the Lord be with you all.

  2. LeAnn:

I wish that I had the words to heal your pain. And while I know that I cannot make your pain go away, please know that you are loved by friends and family who will be there to support you during this time. Do not hesitate to reach out if there is anything that I can do for you. You will remain in my thoughts and prayers. In the coming days, I pray that you find peace and comfort in the memories of the life and love shared.

  3. LeAnn I’m so sorry for your loss. I wish there was some way I could lighten this unbearable sorrow. My heart is so heavy with grief and sadness. I will miss Steve and his charming smile and his quick wit. You are constantly in my thoughts and prayers. I am here if you need anything.

  4. While I have not seen much of Stephen in recent years, he was a fine young man and I am thankful that I had the opportunity to know him. Love and prayers for all the family.

  5. LeAnn I just heard of Steve’s passing. I’m in total shock. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. He was such a great guy and I enjoyed working with him very much.
