Susan Hunt Groce died unexpectedly, Tuesday, July 24, 2018. A native of Rutherfordton, she was the daughter of the late Reverend William Harold Groce and Mildred Cornette Groce. Susan was a graduate of Appalachian State University and was a long time administrator at UNC-Asheville. Following her retirement, she served as the principal care-giver for her Mother and Father during their declining years. Susan was a beloved Daughter, Sister, Aunt and friend. She had a beautiful and caring spirit that she shared freely with her family and friends. She also had the ability to make anyone who spent time with her feel so special and loved. She was a huge cat lover and found solace and peace with her beloved feline babies. She will be greatly missed but we are thankful knowing she is resting in the arms of Jesus. Susan is survived by two brothers, William H. Groce, of Morganton, GA, and Robert C. Groce, and his wife Donna, of Charlotte; as well as nieces and nephews, Megan, Claire, Caroline, Zachary, Erin, Gabbi and Carly. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the Pulliam Chapel on the Givens Estates Campus conducted by the Reverend Ed Hillman. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Givens Estates Resident Assistance Fund, 2360 Sweeten Creek Road, Asheville, NC 28803. Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is assisting the family.

  1. To the Groce family. I am so saddened to read the news of Susan’s sudden
    death.
Susan and I worked together at UNC Asheville for a lot of years and she was
    a true true friend.
After we both retired we tried to keep in touch and she was such an inspiration to me as I deal cancer. She always always had such uplifting thoughts and was so knowledgable of the scripture. Her spirit was one of
true concern and always wanting to help in some way.
Loved her classical music and her cats who were treated so well.
Susan was so dedicated to the care of her mother and dad during their
years of declining health and I know she had no regrets of her time doing this in true love
I have regrets that I did not return her last phone call. Feeling such
guilt. I knew she had some health problems but certainly not expecting
    to read of her death.
My deepest sympathy is for the remaining family of Harold and Mildred Groce.
Heaven has gained an Angel. That is for sure.
Praying for peace and comfort that only Our Heavenly Father can give.
    With Deepest Sympathy
    Betty Ponder
