Sylvia "Jane" Phoenix Ward, 83, of Asheville, passed away on Thursday, March 29, 2018, at her home. A native of Haywood Co., Jane was the daughter of the late James Barnett and Mildred Brown Phoenix. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Norman Dale Ward. Jane ran NorJan Beauty Shop out of her home for many years. She loved all animals (especially cats), plants, and her family. She was also a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church. She is survived by her daughter, Katrina W. Carr and husband Lee; granddaughter, Amber Cogdill; great-grandchildren, Aliyah Nicole Cogdill and Larry Darnell Martin, III; and half-siblings, Sharon Adams, Bill Phoenix and Jerry Phoenix. A Celebration of Jane's Life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3, at Calvary Baptist Church with the Revs. Pat Stillwell, Butch Stillwell & Steve Harris officiating. Her family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the church Because of Jane's love for animals, her family suggests that memorials be made to the ASPCA, P.O. Box 96929, Washington, DC 20090-6929. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. is assisting the family.

You were the best grandmother in the world in the best great grandmother in the world but I am selfish and I still want you here I want your vegetable beef soup I want the image of you after church on Sundays when you would come home after swinging by Ingles and you always had the Sunday paper and a few groceries I still need your wisdom and your support no matter how much I screwed up you never left me you always made sure I had a place to stay with you as well as my kids I’m going to miss you always calling me by my mom’s name on accident and calling Aaliyah by my name on accident I’m going to miss the smells of perms coming from the shop and hairspray I’m going to miss you always telling me to make sure I checked the lint trap after I did laundry no matter how old I was I’m going to miss you telling me to watch my mouth I’m going to miss you at little Larry’s next birthday party but I know you’re in a better place and reunited with Francis and my papa we’re going to make your cats are well taken care of .its hard sleeping in that house without you. Its hard always miss placing things and your not there for me to ask if you had seen it…but im going to do my best from now on and make u proud. I know your watching over me and the kids…tell papaw i love him and miss him too…i love u grammy

  8. I will miss looking for You Jane in your pew at Calvary. Mom will be glad to have you close and catch up with you. I am sure you will find much to tell her when you see mom and pop. She did enjoy coming to your shop to get your hair done and missed not seeing you when she could not come to you anymore . I will miss bringing you your pie at Thanksgiving for mom know that you will always be remembered with a smile. Rest in Peace. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

  9. Jane was a very good Christian Lady. She has given me and my Mother many,many permanents over many years. Katrina, if you remember Conda Painter, she offers her condolences also. Jane will be missed by many many people.She will be with all her friends and family now Walking down those streets of Gold. I bet she will be doing all the angel’s hair up there. She will be sorely missed. My husband, Locke, and I want to offer our condolences that come from deep in our hearts. God Will get the family through this. God Bless you all.
