Sylvia Whitted Smith

Sylvia Whitted Smith, 87, of Candler, went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 26, 2018, at the CarePartners Solace Center. Sylvia was born in Buncombe Co. to the late Grady and Bonnie Mathews Whitted. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Sam J. Smith; daughter, Teresa Reed; grandson, Brian Smith; and brother, Dennis Whitted. She graduated from Candler High School and went on to graduate from UNC-Greensboro, where she received her degree in Secretarial Science. She worked at American Enka, from which she retired in 1991 after working for many years. She loved traveling with Christian Tours, cooking and baking for her family, and spending time with her grandchildren. Mrs. Smith is survived by her sons, Stanley Smith and wife Patti, of Rutherfordton, and Randy Smith and wife Donna, of Candler; three grandsons, Jay, Kyle and Wil; four granddaughters, Hali, Bonnie, Jennifer and Michelle; five great-granddaughters, Emma, Isabelle, Journey, Payton and Carter; sisters, Ruth Stanford, Lottie Trull and husband Paul, and Vinnie Whitted; and brother, William Whitted and wife Carolyn. The funeral service for Mrs. Smith will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at the Groce Funeral Home chapel on Patton Ave. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Her family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
