Tamara Ward Buchanan Johnson, 84, of Asheville, died August 30, 2023, at Flowers Hospital in Dothan, AL, from complications due to a hip fracture.

She was born to the late Frank and Mattie Burr Ward and spent the majority of her life in Asheville. A proud housewife, she was funny and smart. She was also fiercely independent and hardheaded. She loved spending time doing simple things, reading books and spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles “Chuck” Johnson; a daughter, Cynthia Buchanan Frizsell; son-in-law, Gary D. Frizsell; and sister-in-law, Gloria Ward.

She is survived by her son, Dan Buchanan and wife Beverly of Dothan; daughter, Anita Lyda and husband Jerry, of Asheville; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; brother, Ron Ward, and sister, Frankie Jenkins.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 7, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., in the Tunnel Road Chapel of Groce Funeral Home in Asheville. Surviving children will have a private burial at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC.

    My heart goes out to you and your familes. Tammy was a precious women. I went to church with your family in the 70’s when all of you were very young. She was a wonderful Sunday school teacher. May you be comforted by the sweet memories. Prayers of comfort for all of you.
