Thelma Nelson Young, 92, of 24 Briggs Drive, Candler, died Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at Pisgah Manor Nursing Center. Mrs. Young was born in Swain County and was a daughter of the late James S. and Laura Cates Nelson. She was married to Carl F. Young who died in 1961. She was a member of Electra Chapter No. 228 of Order of Eastern Star, and a member of Piney Mountain United Methodist Church. Surviving are one daughter, Linda Young of Candler; one son, Kenneth Young and his wife Londa of Candler; a brother, J.B. Nelson and his wife Fannie of Concord; three grandchildren, Kenneth Young, Jr. of Orlando, FL, Laura Lawrence and her husband Jody of Candler and Carla Brank of Candler; and one great-grandson, Randall Brank. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Mark Smathers. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Piney Mountain United Methodist Church the Revs. Jerry Denham and H.D. Houck officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Her family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church and at other times will be at the home of Kenneth Young, 50 Briggs Drive.
