Thomas J. Wright, 86, of Asheville, passed away Sunday, November 4, 2018 at Mission Hospital. He was born on June 13, 1932 in Livingston, Montana. Growing up in Anaconda, Montana, Thomas was the only son of the late William James and Mary Doreen Wright. Mr. Wright was a Veteran of the U.S. Army and a 1959 graduate of the Montana School of Mines. After graduation he came east and worked initially at the Minerals Research Laboratory. In 1962, Thomas married Sandra and after a brief stay living in Asheville, they moved to eastern North Carolina. As on-site minerals engineer, Thomas helped establish the first pilot mine for the phosphate operation in Aurora, NC, continuing to work there and manage the entire operation as plant manager, eventually managing several other mine sites as President of the Phosphate Division of PotashCorp. Surviving are his wife, Sandra Gray Church Wright; two children, daughter, Jacqueline D. Wright, and son, James B. Wright (Terri Rucker); as well as four grandchildren, Torin, Arianna, Natessa, and Kiann Wright. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Fr. David McCanless on Monday, November 12, at 2:00 p.m. at the Basilica of St. Lawrence. Interment will follow at Lewis Memorial Park. The family will receive friends thirty minutes prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, if desired, friends may make contributions to a charity of your choice. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue is assisting the family.
