Thomas Julius Gibson, Sr., passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2024.

He was born on February 1, 1931, in Waynesville, NC, to the late Robert Hoyle Gibson, Sr., and Harriett Brown Gibson. Thomas was also preceded in death by his wife of nearly 68 years, Catherine Bell Gibson.

Mr. Gibson served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He later worked for the U.S. Forest Service for 39 years, retiring in 1994

He is survived by his son, Thomas J. Gibson, Jr. (Gwen), of Lenoir, NC; two daughters, Cathy G. Matheson (David), of Asheville, NC, and Heather E. Gibson, of Traveler’s Rest, SC; grandchildren, Zachary Matheson (Leah), Caryn Gibson, Julia Youngsmith (Dylan), and Jonathan Matheson (Emily); great-grandchildren, Kira Spivey, Kylie Matheson, Klara Matheson, Gabriel Youngsmith and Violet Youngsmith.

His family will receive friends beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at Malvern Hills Presbyterian Church. The funeral service will follow at noon. Pastor Walt DeHart will officiate. Burial will then take place at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The family wishes to express their thanks to Jeannie Logan and AnnaBelle Groseclose for the tremendous care they provided to Thomas.

I was so sorry to hear about Tom he & Catherine will always hold a sweet place in in my heart Tom was such an amazing man I loved talking to him about growing up & the work he did on the Parkway I sure appreciate the Parkway now after hearing Tom’s stories & the work he did with it I will miss you so much Tom Prayers for the family God please comfort & give them strength during this time I know I will see you one day in heaven Tom I know you & Catherine are reunited once again in heaven & this makes my heart happy
