Born in: Zakany, Hungary
Resided in: Asheville, NC

The beloved patriarch of our family, Thomas William Zichy, also known as Dad, Daddy, Daddy-o, Granddad, Opa, and Tomi bácsi, passed away peacefully at his home on June 5, 2021, surrounded by his children. He was 97 years of age.

Born in Zakany, Hungary, Tom immigrated to the United States in 1949 and chose Asheville to make a new home as the mountains reminded him of his homeland. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Mary Szechenyi Zichy, who passed away in 2013.

He was a life long member of The Basilica of St. Lawrence where he served as an usher for several years, and was committed to his hourly devotion of the Holy Eucharist.

Thomas worked for American Enka for 33 years in the Central Engineering Department. Upon retirement, he continued working at home as an independent design architect.

He leaves behind four children: Andrew Zichy and his wife Susan, Bernadette Zichy Pack and husband James, Charles Zichy and wife Beverly, and Doris Zichy Grether and husband Tobias; 13 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

Following a brief prayer service, the family will receive friends from 3:00 to 4:30 pm on Sunday, June 27th, at Groce Funeral Home, 856 Tunnel Rd., Asheville, NC.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, June 28th, at 10:00 am in The Basilica of St. Lawrence, 97 Haywood St., Asheville, NC 28801, with the Rev. Fr. Roger Arnsparger officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Basilica of St. Lawrence or to the WNC Bridge Foundation (Hospice), PO Box 1315, Arden, NC 28704.
