Vernon Elbert Clayton, 90, of Asheville, passed away on Monday, January 9, 2017, at Givens Estates Healthcare. Born in Buncombe County to the late Vernon Z. and Flossie Buckner Clayton, he began 40 years of work at the VA Hospital in the supply warehouse and worked his way up to Northeast Regional Director of VA Hospitals. He volunteered with Goodwill in Asheville and had great love for his church, Groce UMC, and his family. He served in the US Navy during WWII. Vernon was also a member of the American Legion Post #70, Oteen. He is preceded in death by his wife E. Barbara Clayton, who passed away in 2009. Survivors include his son, Mark Brian Clayton, Sr. (Marty) of Stevensville, MD; his daughter, Debbie Parfitt (Terry) of Bowie, MD; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; his brother, Arthur Clayton (Jewel) of Greensboro, and two sisters, Ruth Carter (Ray) of Hendersonville and Frances Shelton of Asheville. A funeral service will be held Friday at 1 P.M. at Groce UMC. Rev. Gerald Davis and Rev. Andrea McCumber will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Legion Post #70, P.O. Box 9273, Asheville, NC, 28815. Groce Funeral Home on Tunnel Road is assisting the family.
