Maj. Victor Charles Henkell, USAF (Ret.), 86, of 113 Edwards Ave., Swannanoa, died on Monday, August 3, 2009, at his residence.
A native of El Paso, TX, Maj. Henkell was a son of the late Victor Max and Kitty Reed Henkell. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Alta Lee Sides Henkell, who died in 1999; and his daughter, Francis Charleen Gray, who died in 1993.
Maj. Henkell had been a student at Texas A&M University before joining the U.S. Air Force. He served during WWII, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War. He had worked as a meteorologist. He was also a 32° Mason, and was a member of the Charleston Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his sons, Karl Henkell, of Asheville, and Max Henkell and wife Kala, of Swannanoa; grandchildren, Jennifer Petrey, of Pisgah Forest, Ashley Henkell Brunhoff, and Cassandra Lee Henkell, both of Swannanoa; and great-grandson, Arizona Petrey.
A graveside service with military honors for Maj. Henkell will be on Monday at 1:00 p.m. at Green Hills Cemetery.
Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. is assisting the family.

So, so sorry to hear about Vic – I know from the stories that Cassie has shared with us that he was a special guy ! * Thank you all for being so good to my son – James Scot Gaddy – * we hope that you would feel close enough to call us if you needed us – anytime – what a fun time we had on Saturday – celebrating James’ birthday – I hope that time away made it a little easier – and restful for you all – * we have all of you in our thoughts and prayers ! ! * how special to have had someone like him in your family – these guys who are what I call the greatest generation – are why we have our freedom, can vote, can love Jesus and worship openly – May God Bless each of you all as you get thru the next few days ! !

its cassie… i know this is made for others to sign for the family but im gonna use it to talk bout you. I love you so much and miss you every day. You gave us so many great memories to treasure and be proud of. You lived a very great life and thats something to hold your head up about. Just to let you know i got engaged to a great man which im glad you got to meet. Me and james are very happy and when the wedding day does come i know you will be there with your blessings.
