Virginia W. Fisher

virginia fisher
Virginia Waycaster Fisher, 74, passed peacefully from this world at her home in Asheville on Tuesday, September 3, 2002, surrounded by her family and loved ones. Virginia was born in Ruth, NC to the late George Lester Waycaster and Bertha Levada Wilson Waycaster. She married Willard Eoland Fisher of Madison County upon his return from Africa and WW II in 1948. Her only child, Larry Travis Fisher was born in 1950 and he later married Jane Ann Turpin of Norris, TN, in 1972. Virginia attended Lee H. Edwards High School in Asheville and she served as Dairy Queen of the Rhododendron Parade in the 1960’s. She first worked at Belk’s Department Store where she met her husband, and later she worked as manager of the Biltmore Dairy Bar throughout the 1960’s and 70’s until her retirement. However she is best remembered as a loving wife, caring mother, devoted sister, and nurturing grandmother. She was a lifelong resident of Asheville and attended Merrimon Avenue Baptist Church and more recently West Asheville Baptist Church, where she worked in the nursery. She showed her love for her community and her country by serving as both a Democrat registrar and judge for the Buncombe County Board of Elections in her local voting precinct for over 40 years and numerous elections. She was also active in Democratic politics throughout most of her adult life. She had many close friends and family members who knew her simply as “Virgie” and who loved her for all of her 74 years. She was an energetic and outgoing woman right up until the end of her time here on earth and passed through this life undaunted by the trials and tribulations of her time. She loved children and her cats and gained great joy from tending to her flowers. Virginia is survived by her husband Willard, son and daughter-in-law Larry and Jane Fisher of Asheville; grandson and granddaughter-in-law Matthew and Julie Fisher of Raleigh; sisters Louise Creasman, Lottie Pressley and Lois Bailey, all of Asheville and Helen Manning of Inman, SC. She was preceded in death by her only brother Bill. She is also survived by her beloved companion Socks the Cat, and predeceased by his forerunner, Sam. She was a wonderful woman who constantly enriched the lives of those around her and who will be deeply and forever missed. The bonds of affection she fostered in life, however, will never pass from the hearts of those she leaves behind. Services remembering and celebrating the life of this special woman will be at 2:00 pm Friday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Ken Lewis officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hills Cemetery. Her family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home and request that memorials be made to West Asheville Baptist Church, 926 Haywood Road, Asheville, NC 28806, or to Mountain Area Hospice, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813.

Jan and I send our condolences and if there is anything we can do call us. You will be in our prayers.

  6. Willard and Family, We were distressed to read about Virginia in this morning’s paper. As you know we were married the same year. Regardless of age, health, or any other circumstance in life we are never ready to lose our loved ones and especially our spouses. The only comfort comes from a real Faith in the Sovereignty of God and the manifested concern of caring friends. Please know we are thinking of you and will remember you in our prayers. I was also lucky enough to share my parents’ last days with the help of Hospice and I know what a richly rewarding if very challenging thing this is. Though I’ve not seen you since high school, I remember you as a kind and special person. We send our thoughts and prayers to you and Jane, your dad, and your son and his wife. 20. Having known Virgie for only a very few years, she touched my life deeply and I will never forget the love and friendship that she so freely gave me. I will miss her sly smile and quick laughter, but will celebrate the wonderful person that she was. I am grieving deeply for her family, because I know what it is to lose a mother, but she told me many times recently that she had a good life and was ready to go whenever God called her.
