Virginia Wilson Penland, 82, of 28 Surrett Road, Candler, died Wednesday, February 22, 2006. Mrs. Penland was born in Haywood County and was a daughter of the late Robert Grayson and Jessie Pamela Lewis Wilson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Rice Penland, two sons, Rex Penland and Clayton Penland, a grandson, Kelly Laird, a great-grandson, Mark Laird, a sister and four brothers. She was a member of Mt. Moriah Wesleyan Church. Surviving are two daughters, Vivian James of Clyde and Betty Laird of Candler; two sons, Glen Swanner of Canton and Greg Penland of Candler; four sisters, Gertrude Harding of Candler, Mary Wilson of Canton, Margaret Egleson of Walkertown and Hilda Wilson of Winston-Salem; ten grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Pole Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Thurman officiating. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Her family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue, where Mrs. Penland will remain until being placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Mountain Area Hospice, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813.
