Vivian Thorpe Owenby, 99, passed away peacefully Wednesday, October 4, 2023 at Care Partners Hospice Solace Center.
Mrs. Owenby was born March 20, 1924 in Orangeburg, SC to the late John Zebulon Thorpe and Ann “Annie” Phipps Thorpe. She was also preceded in death by her husband, George Herman Owenby; two children, Steve Thorpe and Kenneth “Buster” Owenby; two brothers, James Thorpe and Charles Thorpe; five sisters, Estelle Moore, Mary Goforth, Elizabeth Garrison, Margaret Hall, and Eva Radford and one granddaughter, Catina Morgan.
She is survived by her only remaining sibling, Carl Thorpe; her two children, Jane “Kathy” Morgan (Tony) and Lewis Owenby (Carolyn); 10 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren plus one on the way; 5 great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Vivian attended Oak Ridge Missionary Baptist Church. She loved her flower garden and anything outdoors. She also loved her family dearly, especially all the little ones.
The family will receive friends on Friday, October 13, 2023 at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian in Arden from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 14 at Broad River Baptist Church in Black Mountain, 20 Kate Mountain Road, Black Mountain, NC 28711 with Pastor Larry Sprouse officiating. Mrs. Owenby will also lie in repose at the Church from 10:00 to 11:00 prior to the service on Saturday.
Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.
Flowers are appreciated or memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
The family will be at 691 Morgan Hill Road, Fairview, NC 28730.

Vivian was a delightful person with a wonderful smile. Working with her at Kmart for several years was a joy. She put all us young people to shame with her stamina and dedication to her job. She was a precious lady and a joy to know. To Lewis and all the family my deepest sympathy.
