Resided in: Asheville, NC

SCPO USN Retired Wayne Scott “Scotty” Silver, 79, passed away on Friday, August 25, 2023, surrounded by his family.

Scotty was born on November 5, 1943, in Yancey Co., NC, to the late Bertha and Howard Silver. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Peggy Jean.

Scotty joined the United States Navy at 18 years old as an electrician, later working to achieve his degree and become a nuclear electrician in the Silent Service (submarines). He served 24 years retiring from the USS Cincinnati in Norfolk, VA, as the COB. He spent later years working for Asheville Industries, a subsidiary of the Newport News Shipbuilding and Clayton Homes.

He and his loving wife, Fannie Mae “Sunny” Silver, raised their children and grandchildren in Western North Carolina. He was a proud lifetime member of the Asheville Elks Lodge. Scotty was an avid golfer and some say a critically acclaimed professional pool player. He loved to cook homemade meals for his family and indulged in any baked goods Sunny would prepare. In his retired years you would find him enjoying a good shoot’em up spy or military book in his favorite recliner and enjoying an ice-cold beer in the afternoon.

He was a beloved husband, father, dad and papaw. He is survived by his wife, Sunny; his sons, Mark (Melissa) and Scott Silver, Damon Weirick (Lisa); his daughter, Chantal Sheehan (Tim); his grandchildren, Miriah Silver-Sheehan, Sarah Silver, Emily Silver, Collin Weirick (Becky), and Caitlin Davis (Juston); and great-grandchild, Declan Davis.

Services with military honors will be held at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery Chapel, Black Mountain, on Thursday, August 31, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. with a Celebration of Life following at the Asheville Elks Lodge at 3:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers we ask that donations be made in his name to the Four Seasons Foundation – Elizabeth House, 211 N. Main St., Hendersonville, NC 28792.
