Asheville, NC ~ Chaplain Lt. Col. Willard Graham Davis of Asheville, NC passed away November 15, 2004, at age 98. Rev. Davis was born in Floyd County, GA, graduated from Marietta Georgia High School, Emory University, the Candler School of Theology, and the Air Command and Staff School of the Air University. He also studied at Balliol College of Oxford University, England. He was a member of the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church. He served as Chaplain to the CCC and served pastorates at Bishop, Mt. Gilead, Owl Rock and Union Point, GA, as well as Peachtree Road United Methodist Church, Atlanta, GA before serving twenty-seven years as an Air Force Chaplain. He was a Mason, a member of The Sons Of Confederate Veterans, an honorary member of the British Legion and a lifetime supporter of the Boy Scouts of America. Chaplain Davis served as Staff Chaplain of the 8th Air Force in England in WWII and in the occupation forces of both Germany and Japan. Among his many decorations is the Air Force Commendation Medal for meritorious service. Rev. Davis is survived by his wife of seventy years, the former Martha Manning; one son, Manning and his wife Donna; one daughter, Madeline Parker; three granddaughters, Lindley and husband Shelton Myers, Bae Parker and Sherry and husband Alan Simon and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving are one brother, Thomas Davis and wife Julia; one sister, Betty and husband Clem Wilson and several nieces and nephews. He was proud that two nephews and two great nephews are ministers of the gospel. Rev. Davis ahs been cremated and a graveside memorial service will be held in the Oxford Historical Cemetery in the spring. He resided in Oxford for twenty-seven years after his retirement in 1962. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Methodist Children’s Home, 500 S. Columbia Drive, Decatur, GA, 30030.
