William C. "Bill" King, 86, of Liberty Road, Candler, died Tuesday, October 16, 2012, at Pisgah Manor. Mr. King was born May 7, 1926 in Buncombe Co., and was a son of the late Ernest and Cora King. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Betty C. King; brothers Jerry, Bud, Jim, and Ernest "June" King; and grandson Brent King. Mr. King was a lifelong resident of Enka-Candler. He retired from Enka/BASF in 1988 after 35 years and 8 months. In his retirement, he enjoyed taking tickets at Enka High School athletic events for DAP Security. He was baptized at Oak Hill United Methodist Church on April 15, 1962. Bill was a Veteran of WWII. He served in Co. B 532nd-EVSR, overseeing construction, logistics, and engineering. He was honorably discharged November 17, 1948, at the rank of Staff Sergeant. Surviving are his children Bruce King and wife Rhonda of Old Fort, Brenda Mears and husband Jackie of Asheville, Barry King and wife Amy of Candler, and Blake King and wife Rebecca of Raleigh; grandchildren Mark Jarvis, Melana Jarvis, Tyla King, Cody King, Austin King, and Meghan King; great-grandchildren Zak, Levi, Caleb, and Jordan; brothers Bob and Fred; and sisters Barbara, Betty, and Virginia. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Tarpley and the Rev. Enoch Ball, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Oak Hill United Methodist Church, 277 Oak Hill Rd., Candler, NC 28715.
