William Donald Penley

William D. Penley of Candler, NC, died peacefully at Pisgah Nursing Home in Candler on Monday, November 26, 2012. He was the son of the late E.R. and Grace Penley. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Hill Penley. He was an Alumni of Western Carolina University. He was a former Nursing Home Administrator of Wesley Nursing Center in Charlotte, NC, was the Executive Director of the Methodist Retirement Home in Mt. Lebanon, PA, and was Executive Director of the Methodist Retirement Home in Durham, NC. He was a World War II Veteran, was an active member at Frances Asbury United Church, Candler, where he enjoyed singing in the choir and was a former president of the Methodist men. He served as Treasurer of the St. Joseph Hospital Guild where he was a volunteer for many years. He was active in the Hominy Valley Lions Club for many years and even held the office of President. He is survived by his daughter, Donna Marie Penley Filotei and son-in-law Ortenzio Filotei, of Candler; two grandsons, Rick Filotei and wife Erin of Lexington, SC, and Mario Filotei of Candler; and great-grandson Dominic Filotei of Lexington, SC. A memorial service will be at Frances Asbury United Methodist Church, Candler, on Sunday, December 2, at 1:00 p.m. The family will receive friends after the service. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. is assisting the family.
