William E. “Bill” Long, 86, of Holbrook Road, Candler, died Thursday, April 15, 2004, at the Hospice Solace Center. Mr. Long was born in Clay County and was a son of the late Roe and Flora Penland Long. He was married to the late Margaret Holbrook Long who died in 1999 and was also preceded in death by a son, Joseph E. Long who died in 1970. He served as a staff-sergeant in the 4142nd Quartermaster Service Company of the US Army during WW II, participating in the Normandy Invasion on D-Day. He received a Bronze Service Star, a Good Conduct Medal and a Victory Medal for his service in France, Rhineland and Iceland. He was a businessman and poultry farmer and was a member of Oak Hill United Methodist Church. He is survived by a sister, Mary Curtis of Hayesville; two sisters-in-law, Hettie and Judy Holbrook of Candler; fourteen nieces and nephews, eighteen great-nieces and nephews and one great-great-nephew. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Kim Higgins officiating. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be great-nephews, Craig Brock, Doug Brock, Zachary Curtis, Austin Coleman, Cody Curtis, Scott Holbrook and Chris Jobes. His family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Mountain Area Hospice, P.O. Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813.
