William Henry Buck, Jr., 86, passed away September 24th 2009.
He was the son of William Henry Buck, Sr., and Gertrude Clark Buck. He graduated from Jefferson Military College in Natchez, Mississippi. He attended Memphis State University for two years and then served in the Navy from 1942-1946. He was a lieutenant, j.g. aboard the USS Rocky Mount, a headquarters communication ship in the Pacific during World War II. After the war, he returned to Memphis State and graduated with a B.S. degree. He was a representative for Equitable Life Assurance Society of New York, now AXA, for over fifty years and was a member of the Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Republican State Executive Committee in Tennessee. He served on the Memphis Housing Authority for eight years and became its chairman. He served on the board of the Arlington Developmental Center. He was a member of Holy Communion Episcopal Church where he taught Sunday school and served on the vestry for several terms. He was a Boy Scout Leader for Troop 219 at Holy Communion Church. He was a member of the Racquet Club where he enjoyed playing tennis. He also liked to hunt ducks and doves, as well as fishing. He moved to Fletcher, NC in 2007. He attended Calvary Episcopal Church in Fletcher.
He leaves his wife of 59 years, Margaret (Peggy) Hulsey Buck, three daughters: Margaret Price, Sandra Thompson, and Brenda O'Connor, eight grandchildren, four step grandchildren, and one step great-grandchild.
Visitation will be at Memphis Funeral Home on Poplar Avenue in Memphis, TN on Wednesday, September 30th, from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm. Services will be Thursday at Holy Communion Episcopal Church on October 1st, at 2:00 pm with visitation at 1:00 pm in the Parish Hall. The burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family requests memorials to be sent to Holy Communion Episcopal Church in Memphis, Calvary Episcopal Church in Fletcher, North Carolina, the Boy Scouts of America, the Alzheimer's Association, or a charity of the donors' choice.
