Black Mountain ~ William Leland Hayes, Sr., 93, of Highland Farms, formerly of Westchester Drive in Asheville, died Wednesday, April 25, 2001.

A native of Franklin County, GA, Mr. Hayes was a son of the late William Stevens Hays and Louretta Bowers Hays and the husband of the late Eva Jo Gillis Hayes, who died on March 20, 2000.

Mr. Hayes was a retired purchasing agent from C.P. Clare Company and was a member of First Baptist Church of Asheville. He was an active amateur radio operator, W4AFM and was licensed for 75 years. While employed at Dumont Laboratories, Mr. Hayes was involved in the development of radar and commercially available television.

Survivors include a daughter, Helen Hayes Lewis of Richmond, VA; a son, William L. Hayes, Jr. of Lumberton, NC; five grandchildren, Gaylen Ehrlichman, Susan Hedgpeth, David Hayes, Gregory Lewis and Eddie Lewis and nine great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 28 in Calvary Episcopal Churchyard with Rev. Gail Coulter officiating.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the graveside service in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian on Long Shoals Road.
