Born in:
Buncombe County, North Carolina
Resided in:
Buncombe County, North Carolina
Charles Thomas “Tommy” Koontz, Sr. passed away surrounded by his loving family on Monday, December 9, 2024 at the age of 92. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he devoted his life to serving his Lord, his family, Biltmore Church, Buncombe County Schools, and his community.
He was a Christ follower first, loving Husband to Jessie, devoted Dad and Daddy to Chip (Kathy), Cheryl (Chuck), Bryan (Carol), and Carol Beth (Bryan), Papa to Jessica Ruth (Erich), Meredith, Forrest, David (Jennah), Taylor (Taylor Lee), Laurel (Sawyer) and Elizabeth (Warren), Poppie to Willow, Arlo, Henry, Baby O. and Baby M. and Friend to so many more. He was a giver of gifts, time, and himself. He loved everyone, was generous to a fault, rarely complained, and always responded by saying, “I’m finer than a frog’s hair split five ways.” He consistently did what he could in the moment to make things better for everyone involved. He loved his country, friends, music, mountain heritage in Western North Carolina and his TC Roberson Rams. He leaves behind many who are better because of his influence in their lives.
The family would especially like to thank Titus Robinson, Storm Chapman, John McDaniel and MG Herrman for their love and exceptional care of our father. He loved them and appreciated all that they did for him. Special thanks to the Charlie Bass Connect Group at Biltmore Church, Advent Home Care and Four Seasons Hospice.

Tommy Koontz was a legend. He dedicated a lifetime to educating and helping others. Such fond memories of his awesome leadership. I was privileged, as chair of the regional advisory committee, to have helped the community recognize his contributions, with the well deserved honor in the naming of a school for him.
To his family, our thoughts and prayers are with you. God bless you!
Tommy koontz changed my life 49 years ago. I had been sent to his office because I’d snuck off campus and was late to class. In his office he was listening to John Denver. He knew I played guitar and said if I learned “Country Roads,” I wouldn’t have to do after school detention. So, I snuck off campus again, skipped the rest off my classes and drove to a music store to buy the sheet music. Little did I know, he had watched me leave school again. The next day I came in with my guitar with a John Denver song book and played every song in
it. I missed all my afternoon classes that day, because we sang until school ended and kept going until almost 5 that evening. We made it a weekly event. I have never had so much fun in a pretend “detention”. I still play and sing those songs and always think of him and share that he is the one that made my musical life possible. God’s speed Mr. Koontz, you were a remarkable man.
❤️
Thank you so much for giving us a glimpse of what made him such an amazing educator and leader. All the best to you in your musical journey. Many thanks to you and to everyone for your heartfelt condolences. Carol Lynam Koontz (Bryan’s wife)
Mr. Koontz was a caring friend, role model, and the best principle a teacher could ever ask to work with. He stood by me in many difficult times and allowed me the opportunities to grow. Tommy made teachers and students feel like family. I have been been blessed to have known him and will keep his family in my prayers. May God hold you tight during this difficult time.
Such a great man, and legacy.

My Koontz was a great man. I remember in seventh or eighth grade he had the biggest paddle and he didn’t use it. He was a great teacher and principal. He was an icon on Avery’s Creek and Corner Grill. He will be greatly missed. I am sorry for his family. They grew up loving their parents. They were taught to be good adults

Chip, Cheryl, Bryan and Carol Beth – our family’s thoughts and prayers are with you and your families. In the passing of your dad, the TC Roberson school community has lost an incredibly passionate advocate and champion. As a school administrator he truly modeled excellence in the role of a dedicated service-based leader, impacting a countless number of students, staff and professional colleagues. I will always treasure the wonderful memories experienced as a TCR student under his watch. The naming of a school within the BCS family in his honor is such a fitting tribute to the exceptional quality of your dad’s life.
Mr. Koontz was truly a special man! I was blessed to have had him as my high school principal. Our family grew up going to church with the Koontz Family at Biltmore Baptist Church. I played high school football with Mr. Koontz’s oldest son, Chip, and Mr. Koontz was always at our practices encouraging us players to be “The best that we could be”! His influence on my like is immeasurable! May God Richly Bless The Koontz Family During This Time Of Great Loss! Go RAMS!
Perhaps the most honorable man in our community…
Mr. Koontz was so much more than a great educator, mentor, and principal who passionately stayed true to his TCR Rams; He was a slow-shuffling disciple of God with a purpose in life. To serve others. Hundreds and thousands of others. At 92 years old and surviving 2 heart attacks and 2 strokes, Mr. Koontz still had an impeccably sharp memory that rarely failed. I will miss treasured convos from weekly dinners at “The Corner Grille” and bugging him about going for a motorcycle ride. 😄 I’m so grateful for those times and thankful because the legendary Mr. Tommy Koontz is in a place so much better than we are.
I love you and miss you Mr. Koontz,
Kevin King
We were so honored to know Tommy. He was such a godly gentleman & a sweet friend to my family. He will be truly missed. I remember him at the football & baseball games at TC Roberson his favorite thing to order in the concession stand was a hotdog all the way or nachos all the way no jalapenos. He was such a kind person to everyone he met. Our thoughts & prayers are with the family.
Our thoughts and prayers are with each family member
Chip, Cheryl, Bryan, and Carol Beth our thoughts and prayers are with all of you and your families. Such a wonderful man and a great life. Love to all of you.
Thank you for caring about your students beyond just school! Praying for all of the family that God will comfort you!
My thoughts are with your family during this difficult time.
Mr. Koontz was the best principal and friend. He was so loved by so many!
He was always out volunteering especially this time of year, I remember seeing him at Eblen putting bikes together or ringing to bell for the less fortunate for Christmas, he had the biggest heart!
Anytime you’d see him and Mr. Buckner out they’d would always talk to you and my oh my they would remember you and your name! Imagine all the students they had and that they remembered!!
Rest in peace Mr. Koontz! I truly loved you!
Sending prayers to all of the family !
What a celebration that’s going on in heaven right now !!! We all lived Tommy Koontz ❤️
Mr. Koontz was one of the kindest, humblest, most generous and unselfish gentlemen I have ever had the pleasure to know. I became acquainted with him during the 11 years I worked at TCR and PEP. I would see him at athletic events and frequently around the halls during schooldays, always doing something to make the the school more pristine, like cleaning the trophy case across from the front office or picking up trash off the floor. Mr. Koontz always took time to speak to passers by, and he always made everyone feel like they mattered. He shared many stories with me of his time as principal at Roberson during times of great social change in the late 60s and early 70s. I was so pleased for his recognition in the Roberson District when Koontz Intermediate School was dedicated in his honor. His inspirational spirit touched so many of us, and Mr. Koontz will always be remembered with gratitude for his unconditional love.
Mr Koontz was a cornerstone of our community, a very kind and firm leader in the education of many and an outstanding example of what God has purposed through Jesus our Lord.
I cherish the memories of growing up with his family. Knowing that he was not just my High School principal, but also a neighbor made it special. His legacy remains, yet his presence will be sorely missed.
God, bless the family in these difficult times. Comfort the many that have been blessed to know this wonderful man. Let us always remember what he stood for in serving others.
Rest in Peace, Mr. Koontz. You shaped the lives of so, so many through your leadership, conviction and grace. You will be sorely missed. Peace be with all your Family and Friends.
Thank you, Mr. Koontz, for your example of goodness and for valuing each individual. Thank you to the Koontz family for sharing him with the community these many years.
Proud to have been one of your Rams.

Thank you Charles Thomas Koontz for being exactly who God created you to be for all of us – in every chapter of your life. For growing through each stage of your journey and reflecting even more of God’s grace in your decreasing strength – Jesus was increased in your life. May you rest in peace and rise in glory.
Tommy Koontz was a blessing and unlike any other adult I’d ever met as a teenager in the 70’s, and even thereafter, when as an adult I began to attend his church. His smiles were infectious, his heart so all encompassing, his encouragement for his students and others based in love, and his faith….oh my goodness, a faith that we should all be so blessed to experience. Such a graceful soldier of Christ, he in his faith, made it look effortless. What a legacy for his family, friends, and community. Sir, you were one-of-a-kind, you have run the race, you have definitely kept the faith; I can only begin to imagine the crowns you have laid at His feet. And though you will be missed by so many, you’ve been welcomed home to paradise💜. Koontz Family, prayers for your peace and comfort as you mourn, yet celebrate this great life.
Mr. Koontz was a truly great man and I feel privileged to have known him as a part of my life. It’s not common for a man to have the impact on his community and the number of people he touched…and he remained humble, give his time, and do anything he could for others. He was one of those few that you just want to be around and feel honored that he had time for you. The world is less without him but he would want all of us to try to be the examen he showed us every day of his life. Live and peace to all his family and friends.
Mr. Koontz is one of those rare people who you never forget. His light shines in his eyes and his smile. Always kind and gentle, diplomatic and could just make you feel better just by seeing him. The years at TCR were wonderful because of his presence and steady influence. We will all miss him but our lives were greatly enriched because of his presence.
I have known your family my whole life. Biltmore Baptist church brought us all together and your family into my life first. Then I was blessed to have that extended into not only my education but my son, Porter’s, education as well. I had the pleasure of having Cheryl as my 1st grade assistant teacher and then Mr. Koontz was always connected in some way throughout my years at Estes, Valley Springs, and Roberson. My son attended Koontz Intermediate and Tommy would always make sure to stop and talk to him and ask how he was doing. Your family has touched so many people and it is a blessing to know and have known you. We are sending so many prayers and so much strength and love to the entire family. He will be greatly missed. ❤️
I thank you Mr. Koontz for your wisdom and patience. You will be missed by so many. The Crawford family was so blessed to have you as a close friend.
I will always cherish our time around a fire.
Happy Trails.. 😢
Rest well, you deserve it…
I was one of Mr. Koontz Rams from the class of 1972. Our families also attended Biltmore Baptist together. He and my Mom went to Biltmore High school together. So the point of all of this is to say that for a very long time this wonderful man has been in my life. He was always fair and respectful with his students. He was just simply one of a kind and he will be missed. My prayers are with his family.
Hey was my principle from 76 to 80 he left us much better than when we got there he will be truly missed ❤️ praying for the family
Several years ago, the Shiloh community held a reunion at Shiloh School and Mr. Koontz was there. We had a chance to embrace and to talk adult to adult. The conversation that day helped me to acknowledge the enormous weight he must have borne serving as principal of T.C. Roberson during the 60s and 70s. He told me how proud he was of me as I shared my accomplishments in life and we both understood. He was a remarkable man! Class of ‘73!
I had the honor of being one of Tommy’s caregivers for the last two years. We watched a lot of westerns together and he claimed to know them all by heart. His favorite show, though, was anything with the Three Stooges, and I can still hear his laughing like a happy child. The last time I saw him, I said, “I’ll see you Monday.” He replied as he always did, “Lord willing and the creek don’t rise!” We all know the creek DID rise, but he is now peacefully embraced by his Lord. I will always remember Tommy with smiles and my gratitude. My sincere condolences to Chip, Cheryl, Bryan, Carol Beth and his amazing family.
Tommy Koontz impacted SO many lives in our area. His easygoing manner and friendly chats instilled into teenage hearts a sense of direction, morality and responsibility. He was a loving, caring man that we all loved right back. I pray for peace and comfort for family and friends who suffered this great loss.
There is a lyric from a Jimmy Buffett song that says “Our lives change like the weather but a legend never dies…” And that fist Mr. Koontz so well. I was blessed to know him on several levels… As my principal he showed care and trust in me, as he allowed me to do many things in my senior year as a student assistant in the school office… A few years later he hired me to be on the faculty at Roberson for two years under a temporary federally funded programs… As a friend as we often crossed paths everywhere from Roberson alumni events, occasionally at stores or restaurants or just “around” town. Roberson was his “second home” and the thousands of students he mentored were all “his kids”. Thank you to his family for sharing this iconic educator and man with us. May Tommy Koontz and souls of all the faithful departed Rest in Peace and Joy…
Rest in peace Mr Koontz. You were a great principal and friend. My prayers are with the family. 🙏💖
Words cannot express what Tommy Koontz meant to us. How blessed we are to have known him and we are so thankful for the time we were able to spend with him over the past 50 plus years, even if it was only a thirty second conversation with him. He always made us feel that he genuinely cared about us and everyone he came in contact with. We are also thankful for his contributions to our community through his leadership as an educator, administrator, and his servanthood with various volunteer groups and at Biltmore Church. To all of his special children, we send our love and prayers.
To the Knootz family, we are so sorry for your loss. Prays for your comfort in the days ahead. You will always find your parents and the family memories in your hearts, they have not gone too far! Your tribute to your Dad is beautiful. We have never, and probably never will again know such a remarkable and impressive man. He was definitely an icon for our community, there will be no other like him. He always knew us where ever we met and knew our life story as well as we did! Always called us by name, shook our hands, gave great hugs with a good tap on the back. What an honor for us to have known him for 54 years! Tom saw him awhile back and they parted with, I will see you in Heaven. Tom carries a cross on a rock and gave Mr. Knootz one that day. Until me meet again our friend!
I understand how hard it is to lose someone. Knowing one day we will be reunited in heaven with our loved one is the only thing that offers comfort. Mr. Koontz was a friend to all. His life is a living example of what it means to live a Spirit filled life. I pray for comfort for the Koontz family. I know God is pleased to welcome Mr. Koontz to Heaven
Mr. Koontz was a friend to many including our family. He was a coach, a teacher, a principle, a man of Honor, and a man of God. He was a blessing to me when he gave comforting words and deeds during the time of my brothers illness and subsequent death. He left so many positive marks on so many. Thank you for being in our lives.
Jessie, I am so sorry. I had just talked to a T.C. Grad a week ago, saying what a good man Tommy was. I lost my Larry 3 days before Christmas last year. I know what you are going through.
Thank you to the Koontz Family for sharing Tommy with so many of us. He is a legend, so loved and respected by thousands of people whose lives were made better knowing him, our family included. Hugs, Brian and Carol Beth and families, Sincerely, Shannon and Joe, Elizabeth, Mark and Hardy Ward
Mr Koontz was a great and wonderful human being. Principal, educator, supporter, and most of all, father to his amazing family. Will always cherish my memories of him within the halls and at the athletic venues at TCR. He never failed to ask me about and congratulate me for my track performances after every meet. And I enjoyed listening to him recall each of his children and what great people they had become at his 90th birthday party.
To Chip and Cheryl and the entire Koontz family, please accept my deepest sympathies for Mr Koontz’s passing. God bless all of you!
Mr Koontz was a dear and caring friend,he was the best of the best. The life he lived spoke of him. Rest in heavenly Peace Mr Koontz ❤️
So sorry for your loss
Mr. Koontz was our principal at Red Oak Elementary School. Patty’s mother, Joyce Ingle, worked with him as his administrative assistant. He was a wonderful person, very caring, kind, understanding and a great educator!! His smile would always brighten your day! During his career as an educator, Mr. Koontz made a tremendous and lasting difference in the lives of thousands of students and others!! He was a fantastic and effective educator but an even more amazing person!!! Years after leaving Red Oak, each time we would have the opportunity to see Mr. Koontz, he would always make a point to talk with us! We have very fond memories of him, and he will be truly missed. He made this world a much better place!!!
Wayne and Patty (Ingle) Higgins
I met Tommy through my husband, Steve Mitchell. I spent many occasions reminiscing with them about Biltmore High School.
Tommy was so kind and thoughtful during and after Steve’s death. He was truly a special person.
Prayers for his family. Rest in peace, Tommy.
He was a caring man….one of the best men I have ever known. He will be missed by so many people. May he rest in peace.
Dear Koontz family; your loved one was also a very special person in my life, especially my years at TCR. My heart and soul was always lifted the few times we had the pleasure to meet again; usually at funerals or reunions through the years. My heart is hurting, but I know Mr. Koontz is no longer in pain but celebrating his eternal home with his loved ones gone before him, especially his beloved Jessie. My thoughts and prayers will be with your family always. Love to all of your family.
I think Darlene Zackary said it so well. I appreciate Mr. Koontz’s family sharing him and the beautiful remembrance video of him with us. Blessings to everyone in his family.
It was a pleasure working with Tommy at eblen. Rest in peace
I grew up elsewhere, so I never had the opportunity to know Mr. Koontz, but my husband, Tom Leslie, knew him, respected him, and loved him. Mr. Koontz had a wonderful influence on Tom. Mr. Koontz had a gentleness about him, yet Tom was never in doubt about who ran the show at Roberson! Tom considered himself very lucky to get to know him later in life through the Chick-Fil-A get-togethers. I am grateful to Mr. Koontz for his humanity, kindness, patience, and leadership he showed my husband, who also passed in 2024, during his formative teenage years. He played an important role and Tom remembered it all. Thank you, Mr. Koontz. Please say hi to Tom for me when you see him again.
