He entered medical school at age 20 at the University of Iowa and was proud to become a third-generation physician in June of 1963.

Following graduation from medical school, he served in the US Air Force for 10 years. His first assignment was at Keesler AFB where he served as a rotating intern. His residency training was completed at Walter-Reid Army Medical Center between 1967 and 1970 in Washington, D.C. It was at Walter-Reid Hospital that he met his wife, Susan Biebesheimer.

Upon completion of his residency, he was assigned to McDill AFB, Tampa, Florida. He separated from the Air Force at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
He arrived in Asheville in 1973, joining WNC Dermatological, where he worked until he retired in 2006.
